Cyber-protection for All
Cyber-protection for All
To wrap up Elephant's XD Academy, my team and I received a case study for Malwarebytes, an anti-malware software company that strives to bring cyber-protection to everyone. Defender by Malwarebytes is a mobile app that puts online privacy back into the hands of the user. It empowers through knowledge, giving users the chance to see how their apps are using them.

After conducting multiple interviews, we discovered a few themes:
1) The Complacent: Many feel nonchalant towards online threats.
2) The Powerless: People think there's no other choice than to agree to the privacy terms set by an app.
3) The Unaware: Online threats are hard to detect and seem nonexistent to some users.

Interviews also revealed a few obstacles our app needed to overcome:
1) Mindset: Users aren't in the preventative state of mind. Many are aware of online threats but don't care to act until they've been hit.
2) Cost: People assume cyber security is expensive and have other things they would rather pay for—cybersecurity is not a priority.
3) Cybersecurity vs. Privacy: The term cybersecurity doesn't resonate as well as privacy does. Privacy is more personal and real; whereas, cybersecurity is an outdated concept.

WHAT'S DEFENDER BY MALWAREBYTES?
The app categorizes suspicious activity on your phone into three reports: High Risk, Moderate Risk, and Low Risk. With High Risk containing the most concerning activity for users to review.
Our experience drew inspiration from Spotify Wrapped, where users get bite-sized nuggets of information about their music listening habits. In this case, we wanted to give users quick, and easily digestible factoids about suspicious app activity on their phone that usually goes undetected. Here, they can just tap through all the information they need, as fast or as slow as they want.

At the very end, users can choose to optimize their phone settings with the help of Defender. With the tap of a button, Defender can prevent suspicious activity like this from ever happening again.
